Check if you need to send a Self Assessment tax return

You must send a tax return if, in the last tax year, any of the following applied:

  • you were self-employed and earned more than £1,000
  • you got income from renting out property
  • you got untaxed income, for example from tips, commission or foreign income
  • you sold cryptoassets and made a gain above the annual exempt amount
  • you received staking, mining or airdrop rewards
  • you or your partner received Child Benefit and one of you earned over £60,000
  • you lived abroad and had UK income
You must send a return if HMRC asks you to, even if you think you do not owe tax.
