Cryptoassets: records you need to keep

You must keep records of every cryptoasset transaction. You’ll need them to fill in your tax return correctly and to support what you have reported.

What to record

  • the date of every acquisition and disposal
  • the value in pounds on that date
  • what you paid in fees
  • which cryptoasset was involved, and how much of it
  • the wallet address or exchange account involved
  • what you received in return, if you swapped or spent crypto

How long to keep records

Keep records for at least 5 years after the 31 January submission deadline for the tax year they relate to.

If you have bought and sold the same cryptoasset many times, a spreadsheet or a crypto tax tool will make this much easier.

Valuations

Use a consistent source for exchange rates, for example the rate on a well-known exchange on the day of the transaction. Record which source you used.

If records are missing

Use your best estimate and say so. HMRC accepts reasonable estimates where records are genuinely unavailable. See help with your return.
